Objectives of the programs

 

According to the medium and long-term education development planning of the  People's Republic of China, the 13th Five-year plan of Shanghai for education reform and development, the educational mission of University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST)-"basing in Shanghai, facing the world, focusing on education and serving the society", and the requirements of the Plan for educating and training outstanding engineers of Ministry of Education (MoE) of the Peoples’ Republic of China, our two programs - Process Equipment and Control Engineering and Renewable Energy Engineering have established the following overall training objectives: to train "engineering-type, innovative and international" qualified personnel who are equipped with extensive fundamental theories and strong professional fundamental knowledge and skills, capable of applying the knowledge and skills to solve basic engineering problems, and who develop healthily in such aspects as individuality and personality, with strong comprehensive innovation sense, independent work capability and teamwork spirit in the field of engineering science and technology, as well as high cultural competence, good work ethics, high degree of social responsibility and international perspective, excellent social competitiveness and creativity, in order to meet the requirements for international accredited engineering qualification and engineer occupation qualification, and lay a strong foundation for international mutual recognition of engineer qualifications.

 

Process Equipment and Control Engineering Program is integrated with several disciplines, e.g., Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, Mechanics and Control Engineering. It focuses on the advanced equipment and control technologies required for the heat and mass transfer, chemical reactions and transportations during the products manufacturing process with chemical and physical methods. The program is distinctive due to interdisciplinary and wide adaptability. By systematic theoretical learning and practical training, outstanding engineers for research and development, production, operation, organization and management in the fields of chemical engineering, petrochemical engineering, energy industry, power engineering, environmental protection, light industry, food industry, pharmaceuticals industry and refrigeration air conditioning can be trained.

 

After the four-year study, students in this program should acquire solid basic knowledge of mathematics, nature sciences, humanities and social sciences, systematically master the broad professional fundamentals and knowledge, the students should be trained in the related engineering practice fields of the program, and they should acquire basic skills of design,

 

manufacture, control, operation and analysis of process equipment and systems, understand the development trend in the related fields of the program. The students should be skillful of computer applications and obtain National Computer Grade II Certificate, and they should be proficient in reading English literatures related to this program, acquire effective communication skills in English and obtain College English Test Band 4 Certificate. They should have team work and enterprise production management capabilities. The students are expected to be able to apply the knowledge to solve various engineering problems, be competent of the different kinds of jobs, and have good further-study capability and personal development prospects.

Evaluation and demand

1) Program evaluation

This program has passed the self-assessment of undergraduate programs of Colleges and Universities organized by Shanghai Municipal Education Commission in November 2015 with excellent results. In 2016, this program ranks 20th among 103 Universities in China during the program assessment of Chinese universities and Programs organized by the Chinese Science Evaluation Research Centre.

 

2) Job market demands

Graduates of this program are widely accepted in job market, with their strong practical capability, solid foundation of professional knowledge, adaptive capacity and innovation sense, and high comprehensive competence. They are able to work at enterprises as well as research institutes, universities, designing institutes and relevant government departments related to energy industry, power engineering, utilities industry, mechanical engineering, aviation and aerospace, chemical engineering, petrochemical industry, and metallurgic industry, for design, development, manufacturing, operation, maintenance and management of process equipment. Our graduates’ employment rates rank the forefront among all programs of USST over the past years. In the last five years, the employment rates (including further education in China and abroad) of graduates in this program are all over 90%.

 

3) Graduate survey

The survey results for our graduates of this program indicate that the curriculum of this program is reasonable and it is closely linked with job market demands, since graduates are highly adaptable after graduation and their learning outcomes sufficiently meet expected objectives.

Modules of applied programs

 

According to the curriculum of this program, the entire course system is divided into nine competence fields which are: Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry; Informatics; Engineering Fundamentals; Engineering Applications; Electives; Foreign Language; General Courses; Practical Training; Bachelor Thesis.

 

The competence field of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry is designed to enable students to master the basic knowledge of Mathematics, Physics and other natural sciences, deepen the understanding of natural sciences, and enhance their scientific literacy in solving practical problems in science and technology applications, so as to lay a solid foundation for further professional study.

 

Informatics is designed to enable students to master the basics of computer and information technology, and apply computer and information technology tools to solve practical problems efficiently in the field of science and technology, so as to lay a solid foundation for future study.

 

Engineering Fundamentals is designed to enable students to master the basic knowledge in Chemical Engineering, Mechanics, Material Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics, etc., in order to lay a solid foundation for learning engineering application courses.

 

Engineering Applications is designed to enable students to master the professional knowledge and skills in the fields of Process Equipment and Control Engineering, analyze and solve the relevant technical problems in engineering application.

 

Electives is designed to enable students to master the professional knowledge and skills in new and frontier fields related to Process Equipment and Power Engineering Program, such as Complete Set Technology of Process Equipment, Process System Identification and Simulation. Students may select the courses of this competence field according to their own learning interests.

 

Foreign Language is designed to enable students to master a foreign language and pass National College English Test Band 4; possess the capability to read professional literatures and communicate in a foreign language, and the skills in intercultural and international cooperation and communication.

 

General courses are designed to train students’ humanistic quality, social skills and teamwork spirit. The specific requirements are as follows:

 

1) Grasp the basics of humanities and social sciences, possess good humanistic quality, and show occupational, social and environmental responsibilities;

 

2) Get trained and exercised through various practical activities and teamwork activities;

 

3) Be able to communicate and exchange effectively, and have the capability to adapt to the environment and the society.

 

Practical Training includes five modules: Metalworking Practice, Comprehensive Experiment, Professional Comprehensive Course Design, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Project Training, and Internship. The competence field focuses on training the students’ professional experimental skills, engineering concept and innovation practice skills of the program. It is designed to enable students to understand enterprise’s production processes, and design methods, processing technology and manufacturing methods of relevant equipment and products, so as to further verify and consolidate the theoretical knowledge and deepen their understanding of the application fields of this program, and the students should be trained to utilize the professional knowledge reasonably in the practical process.

 

Bachelor Thesis is designed to enable students to integrate knowledge with skills and capabilities to implement and fulfill designed task, propose solutions and solve practical problems. Every student is required to complete a graduation design task independently under the guidance of a supervisor, and successfully defend the graduation thesis.

Job market perspectives and positioning

 

Process Equipment and Control Engineering Program is aimed to train application- oriented, interdisciplinary and innovative talents who are fit to the pillar industries, new industries and high-tech industries attached with priority by Shanghai/China government. In order to meet the demand of talents in process industry and manufacturing industry of equipment in energy and power engineering, based on the solid discipline foundation and research advantages of the program, the goal of training professional personnel can be achieved.

 

The program focuses on training students' practical capability, professional comprehensive competence, innovation and international communication skills. Graduates of this program are highly adaptable, facing broad career prospects and in huge social demand, and are suitable for the design, development, research, test and maintenance of production technique industry and manufacturing industry of equipment in energy and power engineering. They are also largely needed by large companies, research institutions, universities and government departments for relevant research and management work.

 

This program has established graduate follow-up system to make comprehensive analysis of the situation of graduates. The analysis results show that, our graduates spread throughout the country and are warmly welcomed by a lot of companies. The Process Equipment and Control Engineering Program has delivered more than 600 graduates to related fields, e.g., mechanical engineering, petrochemical industry, energy industry, pharmaceuticals industry, metallurgy industry, light industry, environmental protection, food industry, refrigeration, equipment inspection and labor safety over more than 10 years. The majority of the graduates has become the technical backbone of these enterprises.

China, Shanghai Volkswagen, Shanghai GM / Pan Asia Technical Automotive, Shanghai Baosteel, China National Petroleum Corporation, Sinopec Group, China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, China Aerospace Science & Industry Corporation, Shanghai Electric, Dongfang Electric Corporation, Harbin Electric Corporation, Shanghai Power Equipment Research Institute Co., Ltd., State Grid Corporation of China, Shanghai Electric Power Generation Equipment Co., Ltd., Hangzhou Steam Turbine Co., Ltd., Shenyang Blower (Group) Co. Ltd., Hangzhou Hangyang Co., Ltd., Dalian Bingshan Group, etc.

 

Practice capability

1) Experiment

To implement the concept of coordinated development of knowledge, skills and competence, and strengthen the teaching of innovation and practical aspects, we have established "Energy and Power Engineering Experiment Teaching Centre", which has been selected as a construction unit of National-level Experimental Teaching Centre in November 2009 and has passed the acceptance inspection launched by the Chinese Ministry of Education in 2012. The centre has 7760 m2 of physical space and 6 subject base laboratories including Measurement of Fundamental Parameters in Engineering Thermodynamics, Engineering Fluid Mechanics, Thermal Engineering, Combustion, Measurement and Control Technology in Power Engineering, Virtual Simulation in Energy and Power Engineering, and 5 professional laboratories including Process Principle and Control Engineering, Process Equipment, Renewable Energy Engineering, Turbine Machinery, and  Process Technology. There are three experimental teaching systems: subject base experiments, professional comprehensive experiments and open innovative experiments. Currently, 19 experimental courses with 220 experiments are provided. The professional fundamentals and professional comprehensive experiments for grade 2-4 students of Process Equipment and Control Engineering Program and Renewable Energy Engineering Program are completed in the Experiment Teaching Centre.

 

2) Practice

Practice includes such two forms as short-term and long-term. Short-term practice includes metalworking practice and social practices. Short-term practice requires that students should complete practice training in the practice bases and industry-university-research cooperation bases inside or outside USST, and submit practice report under the guidance of experienced engineers and in-university mentors. Long-term practice includes in-enterprise internship. Long-term practice requires that the relevant students should find internship positions on their own, and carry out internship for 10 weeks in enterprises according to internship outline and relevant requirements, and under the double guidance of in-university supervisors and enterprise mentors.

 

3) Project and Bachelor Thesis

Project includes course exercise in Machine Design, Computer Modeling Practice and Professional Comprehensive Course Design.

The topics of Bachelor Thesis for Process Equipment and Control Engineering Program and Renewable Energy Engineering Program are derived from teachers’ scientific research or engineering application, which aim at testing of students’ capability to apply integratedly the knowledge they have learnt before graduation. Bachelor Thesis includes such aspects as proposal review, free selection of topics by students, scheme argumentation, mid-period inspection, software inspection (if available), selective check, and defense, which are designed to strictly control content and quality of Bachelor Thesis, and ensure that graduation thesis reaches the expected quality.

 

4) Technological innovation practices

In addition to the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Practice Training which students must attend, students may also participate in extracurricular scientific and technological innovation practice activities. USST has comprehensive organizational management system, and excellent activity environment and conditions, the average participation rate of our undergraduate students for the technological innovation practice activities is over 50%. The USST has been successfully selected as “Top 50 Universities of National Innovation and Entrepreneurship”, and “The Second Batch of National Demonstration Universities for Deepening Education Reform of Innovation and Entrepreneurship” by the Ministry of Education of China.

 

During the period from 2012 to 2016, the students of the two programs being accredited have won more than 25 awards at university level, municipal level and national level, some awards obtained by the students are detailed in Appendix O. More than 351 students’ innovation projects have won university students innovative experimental plan fund supported by USST, Shanghai Municipality and the state. Some innovative projects are listed in Appendix R.

 

Admission and entry requirements

 

Admission and entry conditions

 Those who intend to be admitted to USST to study undergraduate programs and pursue Bachelor's degree need to participate in the National University Entrance Exams of People's Republic of China or the unified university entrance exams held in relevant cities or provinces. Those who meet the following conditions may register for the exams: 1) complying with the Constitution and Laws of the People's Republic of China; 2) graduated from an advanced secondary school or with equivalent education; 3) healthy physically.

 

Admission process

 Chinese universities can basically be divided into three levels: those at the first level are universities under the Chinse Ministry of Education, about 40 in total; those at the second level are provincial key universities, about 100 in total, and USST is at this level; those at the third level are other general universities.

 

As for university admission, the admission scores for each city and province will be determined by themselves according to the number of candidates and the exam results. The admission will be carried out in three batches according to scores: there are the first batch, the second batch and the third batch in the order of scores (from high to low). The admission of USST belongs to the first batch.

 

Admission transparency

 In accordance with education law of the People's Republic of China, universities and provincial admission offices should carry out freshman admission work in line with such principle as "university responsible, while admission office supervising". Universities should carry out admission according to the admission rules published to the public. As for those candidates who have passed ideological and moral assessment, meet the admission scores of corresponding batch and meet a university’s requirements on transfer of achieves, university may determine whether to admit such candidates and to which programs they will be admitted. Universities are responsible to explain to those whose achieves have been dispensed but who are not admitted at last. Provincial admission offices are responsible for supervising universities’ implementation of national admission policies and plans, and correcting those behaviors in violation of national admission policies or regulations.

 

Admission reform

Since 2007, some universities are entitled to admit some candidates without adopting the National University Entrance Exams of China but adopting their autonomy proposition examination, or admit those who meet the relevant conditions prescribed by the Chinese Ministry of Education and pass certain assessment.

 

Candidates admitted through the above method have exactly the same student status and enjoy the same curriculum as other students who are admitted through ordinary method. But the proportion of students admitted by the above method should be strictly controlled within 20%, so as to ensure the vast majority of candidates are admitted through ordinary method.

 

Up to the present, USST does not adopt the above admission method.

The curriculum of Process Equipment and Control Engineering Program is detailed in Appendix D1.

The curriculum of Renewable Energy Engineering Program is detailed in Appendix D2.
