Rated workload for Staff

The rated workload of undergraduate teaching for every professional staff in the School is 150 hours per year. Besides essential theoretical teaching, every staff must undertake adequate amount of mentoring, assignment marking and innovation and entrepreneurship guidance for the students. Serving as an academic tutor, and undertaking the scientific innovation guidance for students of the programs to be accredited, are regarded as important references for the promotion of staff.

These measures ensure that every student of the programs to be accredited can receive adequate guidance on curricular and extracurricular assignments, which helps them complete the courses required by the Curriculum, acquire the various capabilities required for the programs to be accredited, and achieve the training objectives prescribed in the Curriculum.

In order to cultivate students' international communication capability, the programs to be accredited are staffed with many teachers capable of lecturing in English to offer some full-English courses, so as to create excellent professional English learning and communication environment for students.

Staff development

Relevant training

The USST arranges one-month pre-work training for new teachers every year, in order to enhance the construction of young teacher’s team. Meanwhile, the USST also arranges a three-month comprehensive training program for young teachers of Shanghai Universities, so as to improve their moral integrity and professional skills. The USST has implemented "Young Teacher Mentoring Pilot Scheme", which allocates mentors to those 35-year-old below young staff who are just joining USST and without advanced professional technical positions, so as to promote young teachers to grow rapidly.

In order to strengthen the construction of a high level teaching team with "double-role" qualifications and international vision, the School plans to send staffs aged below 45 in the two programs accredited to enterprises for practice for one year, or go abroad for study for one year. The School aims to establish a new integrated mechanism of "double-role”-teachers and engineers. It is regulated that only a lecturer has had at least one year experience of enterprise engineering practice, he/she could be promoted with advanced title. Only a candidate has had one year overseas research experience, he/she could be promoted with professor title.

Every professional staff has the opportunity to study abroad. Every year, 2-3 teachers of the programs to be accredited will get funding support from China Scholarship Council (CSC) or Shanghai Municipal Education Commission to get trained and study abroad for 6-12 months. The School encourages staff, especially young teachers to get trained and study abroad, and those staff can receive at least 120,000RMB funding support every year. The USST offers funds and personnel support to encourage staff to study or get trained abroad.

Table 3 lists the names of teachers with overseas experience in the programs to be accredited in recent years, and Table 4 lists the names of teachers who cooperated with and got trained in enterprises.

Moreover, our university library also self-built a “University Master and Doctoral Theses Database”. In order to facilitate the readers to search data, the library divides the digital literature resources into 10 categories: unified search platform, Chinese journals full text database, foreign journals full text database, title and abstract index database, e-books, dissertations, conference papers, standards and patents, English and finance, teaching resources, and video resources. Besides these categories, the library also provides two kinds of free resource access: open access & pre-printed documents and trial database. The library is also, like commercial digital resources for these free digital document resources, arranges specified librarians to be responsible for daily management and answering questions from users. In the “Library Newsletter of the USST”, it also frequently published a number of user manuals for free digital resources. In recent years’ dream of becoming a “World Library”, the USST library has been transformed from a traditional library to a complex and open library with breaking time and space limit.

By December of 2015, the USST libraries have the following collections:

  • 118318 bound volumes of periodicals in Chinese and foreign languages
